Victoria British Columbia   Leave a comment

So I am finally posting this day. Perhaps I ignored (avoided) it because it was packing day and our last day on the ship.

However Victoria is a lovely stop and shouldn’t be ignored.

As we were just going off on our own, we didn’t rush to get off of the ship.

Once off we headed to the taxi line. Taxis to downtown run about $10 for up to 4 people. The shuttle is $11 round trip per person. So if there are 2 or more of you, the taxi makes the most sense. Of course you can’t control your driver. We asked to be taken to the pub Irish Times. Instead he dumped us at the Parliament Building with a vague gesture that the pub was two blocks to the left. It wasn’t. More like 6 blocks with a jog to the right.

At any rate, we came to another pub first, the Bard and Banker. We took advantage of their outdoor seating and had a nice pint.

Next we went to the Irish Times. This time we opted to sit indoors as their outdoor seating was in the wind. Another pint and a snack, “Irish Poutine”. Similar to traditional poutine, but with Dubliner cheddar as well.

After this we headed back to the ship. This time our cab driver was a lovely Greek gentleman who had moved to Victoria some 40 years prior. He delivered us right to the ship. We probably took care of some more packing at this point, but I’ve blocked the memory, LOL.

A fantastic cruise has drawn to a close. I will come back and post about our stop in Victoria…I need to be on another device to retrieve my pictures. 🙂

The worst day of a cruise is the day they kick you off of the ship. Especially as we’ve been spoiled with long cruises lately. Getting off the ship after seven days was downright painful! We lingered until “last call” (about 9:30) since we had a 1:30 flight.

A perk of the Garden Villa is car service to the airport. So we let the concierge know we were ready and we were escorted to our waiting Suburban.

At Sea-Tac we encountered the longest check-in line we have ever seen. But it was Southwest so the employees worked with amazing efficiency. We were through the line in about 30 minutes.

That left us time to have lunch and a chance for my last Dungeness crab until who knows when?

As usual our flights were delayed…but all told by about 35 minutes or so.

Can’t wait to get home and see the babies!

Skagway Alaska   Leave a comment

The last time we were in Skagway, we took one of the most popular tours, The White Pass Yukon train. It was great and I highly recommend it. This time we needed something different and chose a horseback tour. Originally we were looking at bicycle tours, however I suffered ligament tears in both knees a couple of months ago and thought (wrongly) that the horseback ride would be a better choice.

We were picked up at the ship and driven 20 minutes or so to the town of Dyea. A stop along the way gave us a nice scenic photo op.

My biggest worry about riding had been mounting the horse. That fear was quickly dispersed as they had mounting stairs that everyone had to use. Yay! I mounted my horse for the day, Coal, and fell into formation. This is a ride for beginners. You walk at a slow, steady pace on well-trained horses. The trail guides are very diligent. The main reason to take this ride is for the view.

About an hour into the ride my knees really started to hurt. I had forgotten how much pressure riding puts on your knees. Oh well. There was nothing I could do but suck it up for another hour… and be grateful that the next day was a sea day and I could rest. 🙂

Back in Skagway the driver gave us the option to be dropped off in town or back at the ship. We opted for town thinking to hit the Skagway Brewing Co.

It was packed though, so we made our way to the Bonanza Bar and Grill. The beer was plentiful and the food decent.

One word of advice. We were trying to text our friends to meet but the cell towers were overwhelmed by 4 shiploads of passengers. So be aware that your mobile phone may not work.

With happy stomachs we walked back to the Jewel.

Great Tracy Arm Excursion.   Leave a comment

I booked this cruise for this excursion. A small boat to take us to the glaciers. Well worth the money.

We parted ahead of the Jewel and cruised toward Sawyer Glacier.

Stunning views assaulted us as we crept toward South Sawyer Glacier.

Once there, we saw blues that even the naturalist had never seen.

Sailing back on the Jewel was no less breathtaking.

A very wonderful day. More pics to come when I get home.

A fairly sunny Juneau says “hello”!

Off later in the day on a glacier excursion. Hopefully I’ll come away with a lot of great pics to share!

Ketchikan!   Leave a comment

I am happy to report that the sun did pay us a visit during our Ketchikan visit. Yay!

image

DH and I walked around a bit before our Duck Boat tour. Last time we were in Ketchikan we did a tour that really didn’t give us any time to see the city.

image

The Duck Boat was a lot of fun and something new for me.

image

It was only $2 more expensive to book the tour through the ship than directly, so not a bad price.

Learned a lot of interesting tidbits about Ketchikan like it’s Alaska’s 4th largest city with its 14,000 inhabitants and gets the least amount of snow.

Unfortunately my plan for a local lunch were thwarted by the presence of 5 other cruise ships in town.  😦

Other than that, it was a nice day in Ketchikan.

Ketchikan lives up to its reputation and greets us with much rain…will it clear before our excursion in 3 hours?

Stay tuned. ..
